Jerry Lynn Thornton
July 6, 1939 - August 29, 2019

On Thursday, August 29th, 2019, Jerry Lynn Thornton, loving husband and father of three children, passed away at age 80. Services will be held at the Groom Church of Christ on September 7th, 2019 at 2:00pm. Burial will follow at Groom Cemetery.

Jerry was born on July 6th, 1939 in Howe, Texas to R. B. and Lula Lynn (Smith) Thornton. He graduated from Groom High School in 1957 and went on to attend West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas. There, he played the tuba in the WT marching band. He married Nedra Nadine (Clark) Thornton on September 24th, 1960. They raised two sons, Troy and Curtis, and one daughter, Connie.

Jerry farmed and ranched in the Groom area for over 50 years, retiring around 2009. He and Nadine also owned and operated JNT Trucking, Inc., hauling merchandise to 26 states. Jerry enjoyed his work, hunting anything from coyotes to rattle snakes, water skiing with his family (dressed in knee-high socks, knee-low jeans, shirt and hat) and the occasional trip to the mountains in the winter.

Jerry loved to sing, but he mostly listened to talk radio. He served as a Deacon in his church for many years and led singing as well. He also regularly had his family harmonizing while doing just about anything. Jerry served as a Groom City Council member for a number of years and the Grand Marshall of the Groom Day parade once.

Jerry was preceded in death by Jody, his brother, along with his mother and father.

He is survived by his wife, Nadine of Groom, Texas; Troy and his wife Rhonda of Prosper, Texas; Curtis and his wife Shellie of Duncan, Oklahoma; and Connie and her husband Thomas of LaFeria, Texas. Jerry is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Shayna and her husband Cole, Dillon, Kailey and her husband Joseph, Collin, Garrett, Zachary and his wife Taylor, Reuben and his wife Alana, Gabriel, Asa, Emily, and Lydia. He is also survived by a brother, Jimmy, along with nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, friends, and Irma Thias, a very special family friend and provider.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be sent to the Groom Ambulance Service or Groom Cemetery Association.
