R James Hartman "Jim", age 84, of Canton, MI, formerly of Pigeon, MI., passed away March 12, 2017.

Jim is survived by his wife of 63 years, Peggy Hartman, his daughter, Stacie Kingsbury and her husband Robert, his son, Michael Hartman and his wife Dawn. He leaves behind grandchildren Olivia Hartman, Gregory Hartman, and Sophia Hartman. Preceded in death by granddaughter, Jessie Kingsbury.

Jim was born in Pigeon, MI, the only child of Roy Neal and Nola Dean Hartman on June 11, 1932. He graduated from Pigeon High School in 1951 and married his childhood sweetheart, Peggy McIntyre, on May 20, 1953.

Jim served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years during the Korean War, first on the USS Missouri and then ending his tour of duty as Engineman E5 on the USS Oriskany. He was a life member of the Korean War Vets and the National Rifle Association.

After his discharge, Jim worked for 4 years for the Michigan Highway Department on the construction survey crew. He then became owner-agent along with his wife of W.R. McIntyre Insurance Agency for 30 years before retiring.

Jim spent 6 years as a trustee on the Pigeon Village Council, was past President of Pigeon Rotary Club and Paul Harris Fellow member. He was a life member of the Pigeon V.F.W., served as Post Quartermaster for 4 years and received Certificate of Recognition as all state Post Quartermaster for years 1975-76 for being one of the top 10 Quartermasters in the state of Michigan.

Jim was a volunteer for 25 years on the Pigeon Ambulance and a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church, Westland, MI.

Memorial service will be held Friday, March 24, at Our Saviour Lutheran Church at 33333 Warren Road, Westland, MI 48185. Memorial gathering starting at 10 am and service following at 11 am (both at the church).
