Earl Stanley Bates, 83, of Osterville, formerly of Weymouth, passed away peacefully at home on August 10, 2019. He was the beloved husband of Mary McDonough.

Earl served in the United States Navy as a Naval Aviator. He made deployments to the Mediterranean, accruing nearly 1300 flight hours. Among his other career highlights, as the youngest VA-172 pilot he flew the last Navy F2H-2 Banshee to be retired from the Navy. Upon his completion of his 100th arrested carrier landing, he became a member of the esteemed “Centurion Club”. After completion of his Naval service, Earl went on to fly for the airlines, eventually retiring from US Air. Earl was an accomplished sailor and bridge player, but his favorite past time was playing a round of golf with his buddies.

In addition to his loving wife Mary, Earl is survived by 5 children, Lauren Keene and husband James of Mashpee, Steven Bates and wife Sherry of Maryland, John Bates of Alabama, whose mother is Doris Bates; Stephen Bates and wife Nicole of Duxbury, Lisa Levine and husband Micah of Sutton, whose mother Nancy Bates is deceased; 3 step children, Brian Dunderdale of Boston, Kerri Dunderdale of Quincy, and Jillian Dunderdale of South Weymouth; his sister Doris Quinn and husband Jack of Hyde Park; 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, as well as cousins, nephews, and nieces.

A visitation will be held at the Chapman Cole and Gleason Funeral Home 74 Algonquin Ave. (Rte 151) Mashpee on Wednesday August 14, 2019 from 4:00 – 7:00pm. A funeral service will be held in the Chapman Cole and Gleason Funeral Home on Thursday August 15, 2019, at 11:00am. Burial will be private.
