Services for longtime businesswoman Shirley Chambley Curtis of Greenwood will begin with a visitation at Wilson and Knight Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, at 9 a.m., a graveside service will be held in Oakwood Cemetery in Winona, followed by an 11 a.m. memorial service at Wilson and Knight Funeral Home in Greenwood. Dr. Rusty Douglas will officiate .
Mrs. Curtis, 83, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2019, at Country Meadow Personal Care Home. She had been in poor health due to a series of strokes since 2013.
Mrs. Curtis was born in McCarley on June 12, 1936, to Henry and Dorence Chambley. She was a graduate of J.Z. George High School and Hinds Community College. She is preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Virgil Chambley; and her husband of almost 60 years, Bill Curtis.
Shirley was generous, kind, creative and very outgoing. She was known for being a hard worker and someone who would go out of her way to help anyone in need. She had a huge heart for everyone she met and always saw the best in others. Her creative and entrepreneurial talents led her to become a beautician. She was not content to just do hair; she wanted to own her own business. She opened her first shop in Greenwood in 1963, and from there, she opened more shops in Greenwood and surrounding towns. She eventually owned six shops in and around Greenwood simultaneously and had 35 employees at the peak of her career. She loved what she did and the people who were her customers. Shirley also had a love for teaching, which led her to buy Greenwood Beauty College in Highland Park Shopping Center in the 1970s. Shirley was a member of the National Hairdresser and Cosmetology Association and the National Federation of Independent Businesses. She was past president of the Greenwood chapter of the Mississippi Hair-dressers' Association. She was also a member of LeBonté Women's Club and the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce. She volunteered her talents and time with many other organizations in town.
Shirley leaves behind her sister, Mary Elizabeth Corley of McCarley; a daughter, Lisa Cookston (Steven); and two grandchildren, Lucy and Cavitt Cookston. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom she loved like her own children.
Shirley's family would like to thank Personal Care Home's owners and staff, who took excellent care of her in the last years of her life. Special appreciation also goes to Halcyon Hospice, especially to her nurse, Morgan Moore and CNA, Kanisha Johnson.
