"Paul Carter was born in Colleton District, S.C. May 7, 1824, a son of Isham Carter. About 1845 he came to Appling County to make his home, where so many of his Carter kin was (sic) already living. In 1847, he married Mrs. Susan Tillman Thomas, widow of Turby F. Thomas (Vol. I) and the daughter of James Tillman (Vol. I). She was born in Tatnall County, Jan. 28, 1820
They had six children, viz:

1. Rebecca b. Oct. 29, 1847 m. Edward E. Mims
2. Missouri b. Oct 20, 1849 m. Edward T. Kennedy, Dec. 20, 1870
3. James Isham b. Mar. 24, 1852 m. Ada Ketterer, dau. of Phillip
4. Paul Hayne b. Dec. 3, 1854 m. Myra Kennedy, July 24, 1878, dau. of Edward
5. David Robert b. Sept. 26, 1857 m. Isabelle Kennedy, dau. of Edward
6. Thomas Tillman b. Sept. 26, 1859 m. Annie Hamilton

Paul Carter engaged in farming and in the lumber and timber business and seems to have prospered. He became an influential citizen of his adopted county, and served a term as a Justice of Appling Inferior Court, 1857-1861. He served two terms in the legislature as Representative from Appling County, 1863-64 and 1875-76. He died at his home near Baxley July 7, 1877. His widow died May 13, 1893."
