"Death of John D. Wood. The remains of John D. Wood, Jr., were brought to this city on Monday evening from Hot Springs, were he passed away on Sunday morning about eight o'clock, following an illness of two years. The cause of his demise was cancer of the stomach. Mr. Wood lived in this city about ten years but since leaving here his home has been at Hettinger, North Dakota. He is a brother-in-law of L.N. Crill, of this city, and Mr. Crill went to Hot Springs shortly before Mr. Wood's death.
John D. Wood, Jr., was born at Oswego, N.Y., July 4th 1849 and was 63 years, 3 months and 29 days at the time of his demise. He entered the 11th Minn. Infantry in the spring of 1864 and served in the Civil War until the war was closed. He was a member of the Ipswich Grand Army Post, also a life long member of the Masonic Fraternity, which he joined at Elk Point some thirty years ago. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife, mother and three sisters.
The funeral was held at the Crill home on Wednesday morning of this week and was in charge of the local Masonic lodge. of which Mr. Wood was a member years go. The lodge attended the services in a body. Rev. W.I. Beatty was the officiating clergyman. The remains were laid to rest in the Elk Point cemetery.
The out of town relatives of the deceased man who were here to attend the funeral were Mrs. Fred Newel of Mellette, and Mr. and Mrs. Van Sickle of Sioux Falls."
