He was preceded in death by his second wife, Marilyn Mayo; his sisters, Mildred "Muff" Mayo and Maria Donovan; and his brother, Joseph Mayo. He is survived by his wife, Vicki Mayo; his first wife, Rita Mayo; and his children, Lilli M. Weivoda, William W. Mayo II, Ian H. Mayo, Halley E. Mayo and Electro M. Ned was named after Dr. Charles Mayo's close friend Dr. Edward Martin. Upon Ned's birth, Dr. Martin sent Dr. Mayo a telegram full of his hopes and prayers for his namesake. In part, it read, "You have no obligations other than to love all beautiful things, spiritual and material, to patiently and tenderly help those who sorrow or are afflicted, to add to the happiness of those near and dear to you, and always have a song in your heart."

Ned lived a life rich in love, adventure and family. He will be greatly missed. A memorial service celebrating Ned's life will be held in Rochester this spring.
