Lawyer, Journalist, Diplomat. He married Julia Edwards, daughter of Ninian W. Edwards. After attending Harvard Law School, he was admitted to the bar in Springfield. Baker was owner editor of the Illinois State Journal, and played an important part in his friend Abraham Lincoln's campaign in 1860. Baker was married to Julia Cook Edwards, the daughter of Elizabeth Todd Edwards, and niece of Mary Todd Lincoln. He was appointed US Consul to Buenos Aires, Argentina and began his tenure there March 17, 1874. He served famously in that position until the day he died as a result of a train accident, in Buenos Aires on July 8, 1897.
