While residing in Bedford County, Virginia, John Cliborne enlisted the first of August, 1780, served as a private in Captain Nathaniel Tate's company, marched through North Carolina to join Gen. Gates in South Carolina, when near Camden met the American Troops retreating to Hillsborough, joined them and on reaching Hillsborough, he was transferred to Captain Newell's or Nevell's company, Colonel Buford's regiment, in which he served until transferred to Captain Graves' or Greves' company, and marched to Cheraw Hills on the Pee Dee River, was there until after the Battle of Cowpens, then transferred to Captain J. Webb's company, marched to Hillsborough, thence to Trailer's Ferry on the Roanoke River, where they crossed into Virginia, and was discharged February 26, 1781.
The soldier, John Clayborn, was allowed pension on his application executed October 3, 1832, at which time he was aged seventy-two years, and living in Knox County, Tennessee. It was not stated whether the soldier, John Clayborn, was married. One Jubal Clayborn was a resident of Knox County, Tennessee in 1832 and then stated that he was well acquainted with the soldier, no relationship shown.
