She was born October 6, 1942 in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Ralph and Sigrid (Hansen) Thorsen. Sonja graduated from Kingsford High School in 1960 and was a lifelong resident of the area. She married Norman Johnson on August 17, 1963 at Immanuel Baptist Church. Sonja had a strong faith and was a very active member of Redemption Hill in Kingsford where she sang in the choir, was involved in the Nursing Home Ministry and was a Sunday School Teacher and AWANA Leader. She enjoyed baking, cake decorating and needlework, especially sewing and cross stitch. Sonja loved reading and was frequently found reading her Bible. Her caring demeanor naturally resonated into serving her family and others. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed.
Sonja is survived by her husband of 56 years, Norm Johnson; her two sons, Dr. Eric Johnson (Dr. Laura Holcomb) of Oakland, ME and Aaron (Cari) Johnson of Ironton, MN; a daughter, Sonya (Jon) Edlund of Norway, MI; four sisters, Gail Thorsen and Vikki Stephen, both of MD, Cindy (Denny) Lyons of TX and Darlene Thorsen of CO; a brother-in-law, Dr. Sidney (Gloria) Johnson; two sisters-in-law, Lorraine Erickson and Ruth Ann (Frank) Oczus; 8 grandchildren, Cody (Wendy) Johnson, Michaella Johnson, Kyanna Johnson, Sienna-Rae Johnson, Jonathan Edlund, Andrew Edlund (fiance, Ibiye Amachree), Zachary Edlund (fiance, Lisa Hoekwater) and Bethany Edlund; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her father and mother-in-law, Eddie and Frances Johnson, a brother-in-law, Jim Erickson and two nieces, Jane Schleip and Kara Anderson.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 29 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain and on Friday, August 30 from 10:00 to 11:00 am at Redemption Hill in Kingsford. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 am on Friday at the church. Rev. Ronald Wolfe will officiate. Burial will be in the Quinnesec Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Redemption Hill.
