Ronnie “Ron” Edward Young, 73, of Hurley, SD, passed away unexpectedly from a blood clot on Monday, August 12, 2019, at his home surrounded by loved ones. A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2019, at the fire hall in Newport, NE. Interment will follow at the Newport Cemetery, with Pastor Loren Ammon officiating.
Ronnie was born on December 24, 1945, in Bassett, NE, to Irvin and Evelyn (Alderman) Young. He grew up and attended school throughout Nebraska and also the Rosebud and Pine Ridge Indian Reservations. In his childhood, he cherished time with his grandparents. It was through their guidance that from an early age it was instilled in him the importance of family, a good work ethic, and being a great provider. His first job was bailing hay alongside his family for Thompson Hay Company out of Newport, NE, which at one time was the hay shipping capital of the world.
On August 31, 1963, he was united in marriage to Linda Wewel. To this union two children were born: Brenda Sue and Dawn Angela. While living in Chadron, NE, Ronnie began to work for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. He built and raced his own stock cars. His daughters took great pride and joy in watching him from the stands.
On July 11, 1977, Ronnie was united in marriage to Lana Nelson. To this union three children were born: Mignette Mae, Ronnie Russell, and Micayla Jean. While living in Rapid City, SD, he opened his top soil and landscaping and RLM Trucking businesses. He became injured on the railroad and was forced to retire after nearly 25 years. This led to him earning a certificate from Western Nebraska Community College and opening RLM Small Engine Repair in Mitchell, NE. He loved being active in the community and joined the Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department. His children were honored when he led the annual fire prevention program. While living in Lennox, SD, he hauled seed corn for Pioneer. He enjoyed co-owning R&R Salvage for several years with his son out of Hurley, SD. Afterward, he pursued various trucking endeavors, continuing to truck until he retired.
Ronnie’s most cherished past times were with his children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends. He adored animals and enjoyed fishing, hunting, leather crafting, wood carving, and tinkering around in the garage. He had a way of making people feel at ease. He was a great host and made friends and family feel welcome in his home. He had a very forgiving and generous spirit; a soft spot for those in need, always ready to help and serve others.
Grateful for having shared his life are his children: Brenda (Mike) Lammers of Lake Tapps, WA; Dawn Young of Lake Stevens, WA; Mignette (Scott) Young-Smith of Moville, IA; Ronnie Young of Springfield, SD; Micayla Young and companion (Keith) of Freeman, SD; Grandchildren: Trenton (Abbey), Rance (Jess), Colton, Christopher, Kelsey, Takoda, Evelyn, Chloe, and Preston; Great-grandchildren: Trevor, Robert, Kensli, and Rudolph; Siblings: Vic (Cherlynn) Young, Laura Pickinpaugh, Norma (Ernie) Fiesta, Bill (Theresa) Young, and Mary Lou (Chris) Hasenaur; an uncle: Lloyd “Sunny” Alderman; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends, and his beloved dog, Max.
Ronnie was preceded in death by his grandparents and parents; a sister, Gladys Hernandez; a brother, Richard “Dickie” Young; an infant sister, Harriett; and many family pets.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Union Gospel Mission of Sioux Falls, SD.
