Bill was born in 1923 in Cisco, Texas to Robert Grover Diggs and Willie (Smith) Diggs; He was an only child. He died August 2019 next to his sweet Patsy in Dallas TX.
Bill was a Radio Engineer, a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Oklahoma. He graduated with a BS in Mathematics and Physics from Oklahoma State College in Edmond OK in May 1970 – quite an accomplishment for a 47-year-old father of four. Bill loved broadcasting and he enjoyed telling stories about the “fun days” in radio and television broadcasting.
Bill’s parents moved to Vernon, Texas in 1924 where he lived until graduation from high school in 1940 and his parents resided until 1983.
Growing up in Vernon, Bill played in the High School Band. After graduation from High School, Bill knew that radio broadcasting was a special attraction so he immediately enrolled in Tyler Commercial College where he studied General Radio. After receiving his radio operator’s license, he worked in radio stations in Hot Springs AR (KWFC), Waco TX (WACO), Clovis NM (KICA), and Wichita Falls TX (KWFT) until entering the Navy in 1943.
He served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946 as a Radio Technical, petty officer 1st class, serving on the USS San Carlos.
After discharge from military service, he married Adele Kruger. He had met, wooed, and finally convinced this young lady with “stars in her eyes” that Texas was a great place to raise a family. So, they moved to Lubbock TX in 1946, where he worked at radio stations KFYO and KSEL as a radio engineer. But pay was low, hours were long and unpredictable. AND …there was David. Before long there was Carol. AND with another little mouth was on the way, Bill started looking for greener pastures…Television was new with enough financial support to keep paying the bills. So, miracles kept coming …a new job offered in Oklahoma, of all places.
The family moved to Oklahoma City in 1951, where Bill began to work as a Television Engineer at WKY-TV. God blessed Bill and Adele with their own engineer, Robert, not born in a manger but over a Picture Show in Edmond, Okla. Finally, as blessings kept coming, God gave them another son, James (also born over a picture show). A great family, each child with their own talents. Their mother raised them well and each in their own way is serving the Lord. Bill’s mother and dad taught Bill that Sunday was the Lord’s. Day. There was never a question “are we going to church today…in Bill’s family it was always YES.
In 1956, Bill accepted a position with the US Air Force at Tinker AFB as an engineer. Bill advanced through the ranks and served in various capacities, including Chief of the Meteorological Branch, Division Chief of the Plant Management Division and Maintenance Duty Officer. He retired in 1986.
But just as spring brings the dust storms to West Texas, so does God bring each of His children into the circle of His will. While at Tinker AFB Bill was placed on the evening shift which isolated him from his friends. But God is good. The work order dispatcher who worked for him suggested that he attend the Singles Bible Class at his new church. There Bill found a group of Christians who wanted to serve God and “work for Jesus.” This group turned Bill’s life around. But Bill was much older than most and was still lonely. God understands loneliness so He selected one of His angels who was also lonely and arranged for “a meeting” at the Girlie Pancake House. Her name is “Patsy”.
Bill married Patsy Ann Tipton in 1983. She has cared for, supported, loved and worked side by side with Bill in every project and ministry. Being an only child, Bill was not very knowledgeable at how to work with children but he really liked Senior Adults. Bill loved to sing and to lead congressional type singing at Retirement Homes, Assisted Living and in church ministries. For 37 years they served God together through the Gideon’s Bible ministry and by visiting house-bound adults. In 2010 they moved to Dallas TX.
Four children were born to Adele and Bill: David Diggs (Grace) (Grandchildren: Christina and Gordon), Carol Diggs (Jim Siegel) (Granddaughter Lindsay Ruland/Diggs, deceased), Robert Diggs (Mary Howard), and James Diggs (Barbara). With Patsy, Bill has two step-children: Dale Adams (Dave) (Granddaughters Melissa and Heather) and Philip Payne, whom he loved like his own.
