Lawrence Ray Pickens was born September 19, 1929 to Ruth Mildred Ray (age 27)and Francis Tarpley Pickens (age 28), in Weaverville, Buncombe County, North Carolina. He died shortly before his 90th birthday on August 23, 2019 in Cumming, Forsyth County, Georgia at the age of 89. He was buried August 27, 2019 in Fairfax, Osage County, Oklahoma. A Family memorial service is being held in Cumming, Forsyth County, Georgia by Lake Lanier Saturday, October 27, 2019.

Ray grew up and attended schools in Alabama and North Carolina. He graduated from Weaverville Highschool in Weaverville, North Carolina May 18, 1950.

Ray joined the army in 1951. After basic training, he was stationed in Suaun, Korea near the 38th parallel during the Korean War. He helped build, maintain and secure the airstrip. He served 2 years and was honorably discharged in February of 1953. During his time in the Army, he was awarded the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal.

Ray had a short 2 year marriage in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to his first wife which ended in a divorce. June 30, 1967, he married is second wife Mary Jo Clay at the First Baptist Church in Fairfax, Osage County, Oklahoma. He remained married to Mary 50 years until she died in September 2017. They lived in Oklahoma and had one daughter, Marvilla Ruth Pickens, December 22, 1976.

After Ray's service in the army, he had a few different jobs where he worked to make his living. He worked at Capital Steel in Oklahoma, as a TV repairman in Washington D.C., as a milk delivery driver, in Oklahoma City with a Survey Crew, at an Oklahoma Educational TV Station as a technician, as a parking lot attendant and in newspaper delivery. He retired after working for the Oklahoma City Water Department for 27 years in 1997 where he worked in Water Line Maintenance, as a night watchman, and a supervisor.

Ray asked Jesus to come into his heart at age 9, and fully dedicated his life to God at age 28. He then became an ordained Baptist Minister and preached the Word of God when and where ever he had an opportunity. During his ministry, he pastored 2 churches, Sumner Baptist Church in Sumner, Oklahoma and another Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. He also preached for about 40 years twice a week at the Oklahoma County Jail in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and for a time he preached at the Jail in Guthrie, Oklahoma. He ministered in various ways at several different churches in Oklahoma for many years. He sang in choirs, led prayers, preached, served in Sunday School, and acted as an assistant pastor. He also preached at Grace Rescue Mission in Oklahoma City for awhile. In the late 70's and early 80's Rev. Pickens preached on KBYE Radio in Oklahoma City on Saturdays at 2 p.m. During his later years while residing in nursing facilities, he read the Bible to the other residents and led mealtime prayers.

When Rev. L. R. Pickens wasn't working or ministering, You could find him reading the Bible, listening to Christian Radio, Watching Christian TV, Collecting Poetry, Sharing his faith, fellowshipping with friends, family, and other Christians, Playing checkers or especially chess, Watching westerns, working jigsaw puzzles, wood carving, playing the harmonica or eating his favorite foods.

Mr. Pickens was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 50 years, his brother Frank Pickens and spouse, his sister Nell Allen and Spouse, his sister Jean Allison and spouse, and a nephew. He is survived by his daughter Marvilla Pickens, his sister Clemma Wilson and spouse, and several nieces, nephews and friends.
