daughter of Lou Allen Bates & Nancy (Bybee) Bates
wife of William D Jones
--------------------------------
Born December 21, 1912 in Clark County, KY, Patty was the only child of Nancy J. and Lou Allen Bates, both deceased. At the tender age of ten Patty was converted and baptized by Rev. Ulysses Bryant at New Hope Baptist Church, Chicago, IL. Later, after returning to Kentucky, Patty united by letter, with Providence Baptist Church in Howard’s Creek, KY and upon moving “down the road” seven miles to Winchester, KY; she joined the First Baptist Church located there.

On March 8, 1938, William “Bill” Durham Jones was blessed to become the loving and devoted husband of Patty Bates. They were married forty-seven (47) years before he was called to make his new home in heaven with God. Patty and Bill relocated from Lexington, KY to Cincinnati, OH, where as “Valley” residents in 1946, they united with Mount Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Mitchell Coleman. Patty immediately began her ministry with in the church, located then in Lockland, OH, by becoming an active member of the Friendly Circle Club. She later became a member of the Pastor’s Aide Club where she remained active, serving the pastors of Mt. Zion and as financial secretary for twenty-four (24) years. Her ministry to the church didn’t stop there; she went on to become vice-president of the Office Supply Club and then the Senior Citizens’ Ministry that was organized by the late Sister Tiny Bell Love. For over ten (10) years, Patty served as treasurer for the Senior Citizens’ Ministry now known as the Seasoned Saints’ Ministry.

Just as Patty catered meals for the many families in Wyoming, OH, she continued her “kitchen engineer’s” skills, as she so fondly called them, in Mount Zion’s kitchen, preparing repast meals for bereaved families following funerals. This small token of Christian love outreach to bereaved families started on a small scale by Sister Patty B. Jones, is still a part of Mount Zion’s total outreach, but has grown to much wider dimensions.

Daughter, wife, Christian, caterer, a Mount Zion mother and role model to many, Patty Bates Jones could often be heard singing or humming her favorite song, “Just A Closer Walk With Thee” or softly whispering this poem she dearly loved.

God hath not promised skies always blue,
Flower strewn pathways all our lives through,
God hath not promised sun without rain,
Joy without sorrow, peace without pain;
But God hath promised strength for the day,
Rest for the labor and light for the way,
Grace for the trials, help from above,
Unfailing sympathy, undying love.
