Dea. Benjamin “Mumbo” Simmons, Sr. was born on November 28, 1945 to the Late Joseph Simmons, Sr. and Laura Aikens Simmons.
A lifelong resident of Savannah, Georgia, Benjamin was educated in the public schools of Chatham County, graduating from Tompkins High School in 1964. A proud Wolverine, “Mumbo” was inducted into the Tompkins Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013 for his profound athleticism in the sport of Basketball. Upon graduation, Ben attended Technical School where he received a Certificate in Plastering. He then began working in the Grounds & Maintenance Department at Savannah State University for several years, then he became a self-employed Plasterer until her retired in 2008.
In 1966, Ben married the love of his life, Barbara Jean Evans and to this union four kids were born.
In 1974, “Bro. Ben” as he was also affectionately called, joined Central Missionary Baptist Church and was baptized by the Late Rev. William Daniels. As a member of Central, he was ordained as a Deacon in 2006. He worked tirelessly as the Custodian of the church for many years. He was also a member of the Male Chorus, the Outreach Ministry and worked with the Youth Ministry, the Annual Women’s Conference and the Berean Missionary Baptist Association, alongside his wife. “Bro. Ben” loved singing with the Male Chorus and leading the Deacons on some Sunday mornings with his favorite song, “Wade in the Water”.
Benjamin was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Joseph and his grandson, Jammal.
Funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Central Missionary Baptist Church, 738 Hitch Dr. ~ Savannah, GA 31404.
