Spencer Ganes Goodwin Jr., affectionately known as "Sam", 93, went into his heavenly home Sunday, Aug. 18, 2019. Born Nov. 29, 1925, in Iredell County, he was the son of the late Spencer G. Goodwin Sr. and Alma Padgett Goodwin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eva Dean Jolly Goodwin; son, Samuel Clyde Goodwin; grandson, Benjamin Zachary Padgett, and sister, Pauline Mitchell.

Sam worked as a repairman for Southern bell for 35 years. He was a United States Army Veteran who honorably served his country in World War II. He was a long-time member of Friendship United Methodist Church, where he was active in the Methodist Men's Group and formerly taught Sunday school.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Angela (Jimmy) Goodwin Padgett; granddaughter, Sarah Harrington, and great-granddaughter, Lilly Harrington. A funeral service will be held at Friendship UMC, Wednesday, Aug. 21, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Kristy Burnette officiating.

The family will receive friends at 1 p.m., one hour prior to the service. Burial will immediately follow the service in the church cemetery with full military honors presented by American Legion Harmony Post 113. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Friendship United Methodist Church, 907 Friendship Rd., Statesville, NC 28625. The family would like to thank the staff of Maple Leaf Health Care Center for their loving care given to both parents through the years.
