Rector of Stockport, 1306 to 1334
Richard de Vernon was the second son of Sir Ralph Vernon of Shipbrooke co Chester Knt generally called "Old Sir Ralph". He was Rector of Stockport for 28 years and after his death on the 16th July 1334 a monumental effigy was placed to his memory. His head rests on two cushions. He is habited in ecclesiastical vestments and his feet rest on a dog. Round the sides of this monument was the following inscription in Norman French, a few letters of which remain:
"Ici gist Richard Vernouna personne cest eglise"
Translated: "Here lies Richard Vemoun parson of this church"
