Jimmie Lewayne Carter, of Nashville, TN passed away August 17, 2019.
Born in Hobart, Oklahoma, and raised in Indiahoma, OK (Comanche County). For the past 40+ years has lived in Nashville, TN. Jimmie was 73. Jimmie Carter was many things in his life. He was a God loving man, a good loving husband of 53 years, a caring exceptional father to Dane and Dawn, and a devout trustworthy friend to many loving family members and friends. But mixed in with this long line of accolades, He was a trickster…pulling tricks on all unsuspecting people. He'd set someone up, usually get someone else to do the dirty work and sit back and watch the sparks fly. He was in his element.
He was a trained psychologist with a Master's Degree from the University of Oklahoma but his talent was being a poet and a lyricist. We moved to Nashville, TN over 40 years ago, following his dream to be a country music songwriter. He was an unlikely choice for this profession because he couldn't sing or play a musical instrument but he thought like a poet. A cowboy poet. Music ran thru his brain in a steady stream.
He had success with some of his music with songs being recorded by Brook Benton, his first cut after being in Nashville for 7 years, "I Wish Everyday Could be Like Christmas". This song was included in "The Definitive Christmas Collection" (the top 127 Christmas songs of all time). B.J. Thomas recorded "That's When Love was Born" penned with Archie Jordan and Gary Duffey. Moe Bandy, Joe Stampley, Tracy Lawrence, Charley McClain, Kathy Matea, Kerry Chater, Billy Bob Shane, Lonnie Brooks and several others recorded his songs. Tracy Lawrence's "I Hope Heaven Has a Honky Tonk" on his Sticks and Stones album earned Carter a Gold and Platinum Album. "Panhandle Dancer", a song Carter, wrote, produced and performed is still being played on the radio in Oklahoma and is an Internet favorite about Oklahoma tornadoes.
He was a multi-faceted individual who loved Sonic hamburgers and Dairy Queen blizzards.
He will be missed by his wife, Linda of the home, his daughter, Dawn, and son-in-law, Robert Doak of Nashville, TN, his son Dane and his wife Heather Carter of Las Vegas, NV and of course his beloved granddaughter Lola Mae Carter of Las Vegas, his brother Bob Carter of Indiahoma, Ok and many well loved nieces, nephews, cousins, family and so many friends.
Gathering of family and friends will be held at Noon Saturday August 24, 2019 at Hibbett & Hailey Funeral Home in Donelson, TN. Celebration of Life will begin at 1:00pm also at Hibbett & Hailey Funeral Home. A graveside memorial service will be held in Mountain Park, Oklahoma on Saturday, September 7 at 12:00. Luncheon and visitation to follow. In lieu of flowers you can donate to Rock Steady Boxing Music City, 220 Heather Drive, Franklin, TN 37065. This is the boxing therapy for Parkinson's Disease that Jimmie loved.
