Presidential Campaign Manager. A close, personal friend of Republican President Benjamin Harrison, he managed Harrison's Presidential Campaigns in 1888 and 1892. During the 1888 campaign with a field of nineteen candidates Michener concentrated on gaining the second choice vote of delegates until the final vote. Harrison was finally nominated during the eighth ballot. During the 1892 campaign he concentrated on Harrison's renomination. He contacted delegates and alternates, distributed massive amounts of campaign literature, and solicited donations from Harrison's friends and cabinet members. President Harrison won the nomination, but lost the election to Grover Cleveland. Before becoming a campaign manager he served as Attorney General of Indiana for two years. He was called a President-maker due to his astute political campaigning.
