Gene D. Stevens, Sr., 67 of Hiltons Lane, passed away April 24, 2019 in Gosnell Hospice after a brief battle with cancer.

He was born April 4, 1952 in York, ME, son of Harold and Lillian (Kimball) Stevens and graduated Wells High School. Gene was so proud when he joined the US Army reserves. He served for more than 25 years, retiring in 1996.

Trucking was his passion, it wasn't a JOB to him, it was the greatest thing in the world he could ever do. He trucked by himself over the road for several years hauling groceries and flatbed loads then later Joyce joined him and as team drivers they traveled all over the country hauling flatbed and even hauling an occasional oversize load or two. Gene loved to tell stories of being on the road, and talk about the people he met, he found it an adventure no matter where he went. Gene could tell you every route number he traveled on and every town on that route. If you mentioned the name of some remote place, he had some funny event or story to tell about that place and he could tell you another state that had the same town name, hundreds of miles away. He continued to drive dump truck for Libby Scott paving crew and driving the big plow truck at Pease Air base later in life. Enjoying each day he was out and about, meeting new people and sharing his uplifting humor with everyone he came in contact with, being an asset to each company he had the opportunity to work with.

He really enjoyed hunting, around this area or going up in the deep woods with the hunters group, mostly family and friends. The stories he would tell during deer camp and after they got back home were wonderful and enjoyed by everyone.

Gene made friends easily no matter where he went. He definitely was a talker. He would start up a conversation with anyone he met. He was genuinely interested in the person he was talking to. He always wanted to know how things worked and asked questions to get his answers.

He was proud of his three sons letting everyone know all about them. He loved his Granddaughters unconditionally, a big twinkle in his eyes whenever he spoke of them.

Gene is survived by his wife of 46 years, Joyce (Dryden) Stevens of Wells, 3 sons, Gene Stevens, Jr. of Lyman, Charles Stevens of Wells and Alex Stevens and fiancé Amy of Sanford; 2 sisters, Rita Barr and her husband Harvey of South Berwick and Sherry Harriman and husband Richard of Sanford; 8 grandchildren, Amber, Taylor, Haley, Tiffany, Hannah, Kia, Madelyn and Phoebe.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, April 29 from 6pm to 8pm at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick, ME where a funeral will be held on Tuesday at 9am. Interment to follow with military honors in Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Springvale, ME. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick where condolences may be expressed at www.JohnsonFuneralHomeME.com
