COX, Malissa MALISSA BOATWRIGHT COX November 17, 1926 - July 16, 2012 Malissa Boatwright Cox, born in Weston, Georgia, passed away peacefully at her home in East Point, Georgia on July 16, 2012. Following in her father's and her mother's footsteps, she taught school in Fulton County from 1953 until 1983, teaching in the gifted program from 1973 until her retirement. She was a proud graduate of the University of Georgia where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree in Early Education. Malissa was passionate about many things. She devoted much of her time to her beloved Delta Kappa Gamma Society, where she held numerous leadership positions during her 50+ years of involvement, including Psi State President (79-81) and Executive Secretary (93-07), as well as Chairman of several international committees, including the Eunah Temple Holden Leadership Fund from 1995-2008. In addition, she served on the Board of Directors for the Atlanta Association of Education and held leadership roles with the Georgia Association of Education and the Atlanta Board of Education. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Atlanta for over 65 years, volunteering for about 35 of those years in the costume department for the church's annual Atlanta Passion Play production. She was active in the East Point Women's Club and was named Women of the Year for 2004. A cancer survivor herself, she was heavily involved with the American Cancer Society in Clayton County from 1977 and held leadership roles for ACS's Reach to Recovery Program. At times in her life, she also enjoyed volunteering at Spivey Hall, the Wren's Nest (Joel Chandler Harris Memorial Association) and East Point Garden Club. Malissa nurtured countless friendships over the years, and was held in high esteem by those who knew her. Everyone appreciated her quick wit and sly sense of humor. She is predeceased by her wonderful brother, John Cox, who passed away in April of 2011. She is survived by her first cousin, Maizie Hale Voils. Her memorial service will be held at H.M. Patterson & Son, Spring Hill at 11:00am on Saturday, July 21st. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to Southwest Christian Hospice, Union City, Georgia or any of the many organizations Malissa supported.
