Carole Elaine Baker departed this life Wednesday, January 30, 2019 after a brief illness. She was born on November 29, 1935 to the late Noble and Geneva McGinnis and was preceded in death by her husband Lee Baker, and grandson Mitchell O’Bryan. She was raised in New Castle, IN and lived in Indiana most of her life. She was married to Lee Baker for 39 years before he passed away and has 4 children, 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren..

Lee was the love of her life and they enjoyed many of the same things: dancing, traveling, fish fries, reading the newspaper and living in Colorado. Hopefully, heaven has weekly fish fries with music and dancing. They will be there all the time living it up. She loved IU. She met Lee there, some of her children and 4 of her grandchildren went there and she loved their basketball games. She loved the Broncos while living in Denver but became a Colts fan upon her return to Indianapolis. She died with her Colts blanket..

She had a group of friends (the Fantastic Five as Lee called them) that stayed close throughout their 50 years of friendship, meeting for lunch several times a year. She loved watching IU basketball and traveling to IU for football games with her husband and IU friends.

Elaine loved Christmas and would spend hours shopping and then spend an entire day wrapping presents. She would wear a Christmas Sweater or shirt every day in December and loved to decorate for the holiday; music boxes were a favorite gift for her grandchildren.

She loved to visit her Aunt Zola in Key Largo, Florida every year and they enjoyed feeding the manatees that swam up the canal, and going shrimping. Elaine and Lee traveled after they moved to Denver in 1984, visiting Morroco, Australia, England, and more. She played golf with Lee and some of her grandsons. She enjoyed it and also volunteered at the International Golf Tournament in Denver, Colorado for may years.

She was thrilled to become a grandparent (Mimi) and loved shopping for them and traveling to visit them whether in Arizona, New Hampshire or Indianapolis. After her husband’s death and return to Indianapolis, Elaine was at every sporting event, concert, or celebration. Elaine took great pride in her grandchildren. Her dementia stole her memory of their names but not the faces of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She lit up when they walked into the room. When she moved into assisted living, she called Mitchell her Honeybun, and she loved sitting with him and holding his hand.

She was a voracious newspaper reader. Lee would joke and say her fingers should be black from the ink as long as she read it in the mornings. Elaine loved to read, and volunteered at the library in Denver repairing books. She loved to play Scrabble, Rummikub, and do jigsaw puzzles. Even as her memory loss began, she could beat anyone in Scrabble. Elaine enjoyed jigsaw puzzles. She had a table set up in her condo and always had one she was working on. They could take a long time but she persevered,

Elaine hadn’t been able to attend a church in many years, but she had faith. She grew up in a Baptist church in New Castle, attended Lawrence United Methodist Church in Indianapolis and was a member of one of their women’s groups. Dementia didn’t take her faith, just her ability to practice it. She volunteered for many years with the Salvation Army where she faithfully rang the bell during the red kettle campaign in December.

Dementia robbed her of her many things but her love for her family was always apparent. She was preceded in death by one of her grandsons, Mitchell Lee. Mitchell, whom she called “honey bun” held a special place in her heart. We rejoice knowing that she has been reunited with both of her honey buns, Lee and Mitchell.

She leaves behind daughters Nancy (Larry) O’Bryan, Sharon Baker (Steve West) and Stephanie Streeter (Doug Silhacek) and son, Scott (Kate Baker). She was Mimi to her grandchildren Lizzie (Kevin) McCusker, Andy (Cheryl), Tom, and Will O’Bryan, Brayden (Katie) and Cogan Streeter, and Morgan and Victoria Baker and Gigi to her 5 great- grandchildren: Molly, Paul, Anne and Thomas McCusker, and Declan Streeter. The family also wishes to thank Denise Bullock for the love and care she gave to Elaine over the years, treating her as if she was her own mother.
