James Aloysius Phelan, a longtime resident of West Chester, PA, passed away on August 11, 2019, with his loving family by his side.

James, known as Jim to friends and family, and also known as Mr. Phelan to his many students, was born on March 26, 1932 in Bryn Mawr, PA, the fifth of Lawrence T. and Florence (Cipolari) Phelan's eight children, all raised in Daylesford, PA, and two of whom, survive him.

He is also survived by his cousin.

A 1950 graduate of Saint Agnes High School in West Chester, Jim served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1954, stationed at various bases in the U.S. and Europe.

He studied education at Villanova University (B.S. '59) and later earned a master's degree in educational administration.

Jim married in 1959, and they celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary this past June.

In addition to his wife, brothers, and cousin, he is survived by four children, and ten grandchildren.

A lifelong educator, Jim began teaching at St. Aloysius Academy in Bryn Mawr and taught English and coached basketball for many years at Springer Jr. High and Talley Middle School in Wilmington, Delaware.

Well-read, funny and kind, Jim was a family-centered man. "Pop Pop" delighted in spending time with each grandchild.

He was an avid fisherman and gardener and a loyal fan of Villanova Basketball and the Philadelphia Phillies and the Eagles.

He loved summer vacations in Westport, MA, and the Outer Banks of NC, and traveling with Nancy to Air Force reunions around the U.S.

The couple also fulfilled their lifelong dream by touring Italy in 2013.

Funeral Mass: Wednesday, August 21, at 11 a.m. at Saints Simon and Jude Church, 8 Cavanaugh Court, West Chester, PA.

Visitation: 10 a.m. at the church, prior to celebration of Mass.

Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Chester County Hero Fund, 202 Ford Circle, West Chester, PA.
