Peter, lovingly referred to as “Pete”, was born in the Bronx, New York on August 15, 1956 to Catherine and Arthur Rose. He proudly enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 18 and even after leaving the Army continued to work for the defense department deployed across the globe for many years. Pete took that strong Bronx accent and direct, matter of fact personality overseas to deserts, to war zones, and finally to his home in Pensacola.
In 2003, with what began as a single look across a crowded room, Pete met Joseph “Joe” Averill, who would become the love of his life. When Pete’s contracting work took him back to treacherous areas overseas, Joe prayed and patiently waited for his return. A few years later, Pete returned and built his home with Joe. On September 13, 2014, Pete married Joe in a small ceremony surrounded by friends and family on Pensacola Beach.
Pete was a proud patriot and US Army veteran who loved his country. His laughter was infectious as was his care and concern for others above himself. He was unflappable in the most extreme of circumstance even in his last days as he battled to survive advanced cancer. His grace in the most tender of moments was extraordinary as is the amount of love shared among his friends, family and chosen family.
Pete is preceded in death by his mother Catherine and father Arthur and is survived by his loving husband, Joe, and brother Thomas as well as a large extended family and many dear close friends.
Family, friends and others whose lives Pete touched are invited to WATERS & HIBBERT FUNERAL HOME at 124 Gregory St, Pensacola, Florida from 5pm – 7pm on Friday, August 16, 2019. General visitation will be from 5pm – 6pm, and a Memorial Service will begin at 6pm.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Covenant Hospice, 5041 North 12th Avenue, Pensacola, Florida, 32504. The family would like to express their deepest thanks for the love, kindness, and graciousness, Pete received while in their care.
