Shirley J. Carr, 90, of Kearney passed away on August 15, 2019 at Brookdale Kearney Northridge. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 19, 2019 at O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home in Kearney. The Rev. Melody Adams will officiate. Interment will follow at Broken Bow Cemetery in Broken Bow. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Services are entrusted to O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral and Cremation Services.

Shirley Jean Carr was born December 19, 1928 at Purdum, Nebraska to John Yancey and Cora (Boyd) Smith. Shirley and her family moved to Broken Bow in 1936 and she graduated from Broken Bow High School with the class of 1947.

On December 19, 1948 Shirley was united in marriage to Frank L. Carr at the Presbyterian Church in Broken Bow. She was employed at Becton Dickinson in Broken Bow from 1960 to 1990, retiring in January of 1991. The couple moved to Gibbon in February 1993 to be closer to their son, Sherman and his family. The couple later moved to Kearney in April of 2006.

Shirley was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Broken Bow where she served as Financial Secretary, Sunday School teacher, and a member of Latrea Circle. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary #3576, Rebekah Lodge #110, and the Broken Bow Drove of BPOE Does #68. In Gibbon, Shirley was a member of Faith United Church and was honored by the United Methodist Women in 2002-2003, Love, Mary Martha Circle, Faithful Rebekah Lodge #89, Smile City Kitchen Band, the American Legion Auxiliary #310, Tuscan Chapter #35 Order of the Eastern Star of Kearney and joined the Kearney First United Methodist Church in 2006.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Frank Carr of Kearney; son, Sherman Carr and his wife, Janet of Gibbon; grandchildren, Holly Ann Valdez and her husband, Henry of Omaha, Abby Marie Evans and her husband, Jason of St. Louis, MO, and Maggie Lynn Carr of Minneapolis, MN; great grandchildren, Haley Evans, Grayson Valdez and Reese Evans; step great grandchildren, Elayne and Dawson Evans; sister Audrey Roseberry of Prineville, OR; along with a host of other relatives and many friends.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Dora Schmidt and Irene Hodge; and brothers, Bob Smith, Harry Smith, Mark Smith and Pete Smith.
