Edward Eugene "Ed" Bates, Sr., 75 of Hearne passed from this life Wednesday, February 14, 2018 into the loving arms of our Savior Jesus Christ and his wife, Janie who preceded him in death.

Ed was a lifelong member of Robertson County and a graduate of Hearne High School. He served in the National Guard and was a proud member of the Local 88 Union where he had a successful career as a plumber. Ed worked locally and also traveled all over the United States working his craft. He was a big man with even a bigger heart. He had a passion for the Lord, his family and of course fishing.

Ed was born on June 6, 1942 to Dave Newsome Bates and Effie Jo (Bishop) Bates. He was the fifth of seven children and was preceded in death by his parents, Dave Newsome Bates and Effie Jo (Bishop) Bates; sister and brother-in-law, Martha Sue and C. C. "Joe" Templeton; brother, David Sanders Bates; sister-in-law, Barbara Jeanette Bates; and brother-in-law, Richard Batten.

Ed is survived by two brothers, Norman Mack Bates and Steven Conrad Bates; two sisters, Ina Jo Williams and husband, James "Red" and Madlyn Batten; one sister-in-law, Jarrell Dean Bates. Ed is also survived by his two sons, Edward "Gene" Bates, Jr. and wife, Angie and Stephen "Scott" Bates and wife, Stacy. He has seven grandchildren, Morris, Tyler and Emberly Bates, Carrie Rogers, Cameron Cougot, Evan and Holden Howard; one great-grandson, Jayce Cougot; and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation welcomed Saturday, February 17, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Celebration of Life service was Sunday, February 18, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. both were held at Bethany Baptist Church, 9250 FM 391, Hearne, Texas. Interment was at the Hearne City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hospice Brazos Valley or your charity of choice.

Services were in the care of Heartfield-Ritter Funeral Home in Hearne, Texas.
