James Garman Tapley of Roanoke, Va., son of the late James Isaac and Effie May Tapley, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, December 4, 2016.

He is survived by his wife of 67 1/2 years, Martha Snoddy Tapley; his sons, James Garman Tapley Jr. and his wife, Page, of Lawrenceville, Ga., and David Lee Tapley and his wife, Paula, of Lutz, Fla.; grandsons, Bryan Shands Tapley and David Hollis Tapley; one stepgranddaughter, Stephanie Varner Wilson and her husband, Mark; and four great-grandchildren, Jack Vincent Wilson, Lilly Wilson, Blake Wilson and Harper Tapley.

Mr. Tapley entered Virginia Military Institute in the Fall of 1939 after graduating from Logan High School in West Virginia in May of 1939. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in May of 1943 with a B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering. James attended Officer's School at Fort Monmouth, NJ., the United States Army Electronics Training Center at Harvard University. He served four years in the Signal Corps in the Southwest Pacific, Papua, New Guinea and Luzon in the Philippine Islands. James served active duty for four years from 1943 to 1947, retiring with the rank of Captain. He served with the 3147th Signal Service Battalion and the 60th Signal Battalion.

During his Army service, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Emblem, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic - Pacific Medal with three Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Medal with Bronze Star, Meritorious Achievement Medal and the Armed Forces Service Medal.

James was an Eagle Scout with 33 merit badges. He served two terms as President of the Kiwanis Club of the Roanoke Valley. James was a Deacon at Calvary Baptist Church and at Rosalind Hills Baptist Church. He coached the Little League and Pony League for the Cave Spring Lion's Club in the old Cave Spring Recreation League.

James also held a private pilot's license for single engine aircraft. He retired from Appalachian Power Company on February 1, 1982, after 36 years of service. James was a member of Lakeland Lodge #190 A.F. & A.M., Murray Royal Arch Chapter #22, Bayard Commandery #15, Knights Templar and the Kazim Temple of the Shrine for many years.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 7, 2016, at Rosalind Hills Baptist Church with The Rev. Rick Sewell officiating. Interment with Full Military Honors will be private. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton Ave
