Dr. Margaret Newton Phillips of Elkton, TN age 99, passed away peacefully May 7, 2022. Margaret was born March 11, 1923 in Middletown, Ohio to parents Myron and Margaret Newton. Margaret was predeceased by Charles A. Phillips her husband of 55 years, her daughter Dianne Courtenay, and son John Phillips.
After graduating from high school, Marge served as a Navy nurse in World War II, and it was there that she met her husband who also served in the Navy. Marge and family moved to Madison, Alabama in 1958 when her husband went to work for NASA as a patent attorney. During this time Marge worked as a registered nurse at Huntsville Hospital. While raising five children, Marge continued her education ultimately completing her PHD in Human Development Counseling from Vanderbilt University. Marge taught psychiatric nursing at Calhoun Community College, the University of Alabama Huntsville, and Athens State University. Marge enjoyed gardening, reading, and traveling. Marge was a remarkable, caring person. She always had a very positive outlook on life and cared very much for her family and friends. Marge was a member of Elkton United Methodist Church. A Memorial Service will be held at Elkton United Methodist Church, 149 Church St, Elkton, TN on May 28th with visitation from 1PM until the time of her service at 2 PM, Pastor Brad Smith officiating. Following the service, the burial will be at Gatlin cemetery.
