Obituary for James “Jim” Lynn Bunch
James Lynn Bunch, age 67, of Dallas, Texas, passed away early in the morning of July 29, 2019, surrounded by his family. Jim will be remembered at a memorial service at White Rock United Methodist Church, 1450 Oldgate Lane, Dallas, Texas 75218 at 10:00 AM on Monday, August 5, 2019, with a reception to follow. He will be buried that afternoon in a private ceremony at Restland in Dallas near his mom and dad. Jim was born in Dallas, Texas, on September 19, 1951, to William Paul and Rebecca Susan Bunch. He was the second of three boys, flanked on both sides by older brother Robert and younger brother Richard. After a short trip to Oklahoma for his first few years, he got back to Texas as soon as he could, growing up in east Dallas and graduating from Bryan Adams High School in 1969. After three semesters at Southern Methodist University, he went on to North Texas State University, where he graduated with a degree in mathematics in 1972 and, more importantly, met Debra Marie Braun, the love of his life, who he married in August 1974. After college, he entered the nascent software engineering field, working first for Collins Radio, and then several other telecommunications companies, including DSC Communications, Samsung Telecommunications, AppTrigger, MetaSwitch, and most recently, Cirries Technologies. Jim’s career took him all over the world, beginning in 1976 when he and Debbie spent time living outside of Paris, France, while he worked on a telecommunications project for a major French bank. They had the opportunity to travel all over Europe at a young age. They developed a lifelong love of wine while in France that they shared with many great friends over the years. Jim and Debbie returned to Dallas and started a family in 1978 with the birth of their son, James Nicholas. Jim completed his master’s degree in Computer Science at Southern Methodist University in 1981, while working a full-time job and being a full-time dad. Four years later, he became a parent for a second time with the birth of his daughter, Ashley Marie. The most important people in Jim’s life were his family. For nearly 45 years, Jim was married to Debbie. They were the best of friends, constant companions, and devoted parents to Nick and Ashley. Once the nest emptied, they had great fun traveling to many places in Europe, Canada, and the United States. About nine years ago, they purchased a lake house on Lake Bob Sandlin and spent many fun and relaxing days enjoying each other’s company and the East Texas Piney Woods. Jim was an incredibly dedicated father to his children. He inspired in them a commitment to hard work through his actions, yet never let his professional life prevent him from being actively involved in all his children’s activities. He provided for them in so many ways. He coached baseball, basketball, soccer, and golf. He helped them with their homework, especially when they didn’t want to do it. He was at every band concert, dance and piano recital, and sporting event. He inspired them to be honest and forthright, to work hard and to never quit. He wasn’t shy about steering his kids back to the right direction when necessary, but he always did so with unconditional love and support. Outside of work and his family, Jim never stopped pursuing his passions. He played guitar all his life, always enjoying a jam session with his friends. As he got older, his passion for guitars turned into a passion for not just playing guitars, but collecting them. He had roughly 30 guitars of all types that he proudly displayed in his “Guitar Room.” One of his favorite guitars was a 1976 Sunburst Gibson Les Paul. Jim also loved playing golf. He grew up playing at the Dallas Athletic Club and was a member for many years. As with all aspects of his life, Jim acted with honesty and integrity. In all the rounds of golf, Jim never made a hole in one. Once, on the Seventh Hole of the Blue Course at the DAC, he watched his ball cross the water, land on the green, and roll in the hole. Only problem was that his first tee shot found the water. So Jim wrote down three and went on to the next hole. Jim was never happier than in the last years of his life when he got to spend time with his grandchildren: Jack and Sam, age 7, Kate, age 4, and Chloe, age 2. To them, he was “Guh Guh,” a name bestowed upon him by the twins. Guh Guh loved to spend time with his grandchildren and was incredibly active in all aspects of their lives. He loved nothing more than hanging out with the grandkids at his lake house, where they would burn sticks, roast marshmallows, swim in the lake, and play foosball. He was preceded in death by his father, William Paul, and his mother, Rebecca Susan. He is survived by his wife of nearly 45 years, Debra Marie Bunch; his two children, James Nicholas Bunch and Ashley Marie Jaska; son-in-law Aaron Michael Jaska; four grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Jack, Sam, Kate, and Chloe; his two brothers, Robert and Richard Bunch; nephew Benjamin Aaron Bunch; niece Elizabeth Grace Bunch, and many other extended family members. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed. Funeral arrangements have been faithfully entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Cemetery, which is located at 13005 Greenville Avenue, at the intersection of Restland Road and Greenville Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75243, and can be reached at (972)238-7111.
