He was preceded in death by his father, Willie Martin Bates; mother, Elizabeth Wilson Blake; stepfather, Lance Blake; grandfather, Oscar Thomas Wilson; grandmother, Beulah Wilson.
Bruce was a 1965 graduate of Dunn High School and a graduate of Southwood College in Laurinburg. He had retired from the NCDMV and was a retired Captain with the Erwin Police Department. He also was a member of the Neill S. Stewart Masonic Lodge in Erwin.
Entombment at Devotional Gardens.
Bruce is survived by his wife, Marie Grimaldi Bates; daughters, Michelle Haire and boyfriend Chris Baggett of Erwin, Angela Coats and husband Wayne of Erwin, Maria Bowden and husband Chad of Morganton; son, Bruce Bates, Jr. and wife Jennifer of Coats; ten grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
