Sylvia Haffner Payne of Rushville, Indiana passed away on Thursday August 18, 2016 . She was born in South Bend, Indiana, August 23, 1937 to C.S. (Larry) and Mary Haffner. When Sylvia was a Junior in High School, she moved to New Castle, Indiana where she graduated from New Castle High School in 1955.

Sylvia attended Hanover College and Ball State University. Encouraging children to read was an enduring passion and she taught for many decades in the Rushville schools. Sylvia was always very involved in events and organizations in Rushville and instilled a love of community service in her children. For all her volunteer activities, she was perhaps most renown and beloved at Halloween for being The Spider Lady to generations of trick-or-treating children.

She married Jim Payne on June 14, 1959, her best friend and sweetheart for 57 years of wonderful adventures. He survives, along with her children, Kathy Payne of Columbus, Ohio, Deborah Bergren of Pittsburgh, PA and David (Denise) Payne of Rushville, six beloved grandchildren; Anders, Kelsey, Britta, Elissa Bergren, Lauryn and Carter Payne, two exchange grandchildren; Kelly and Guillem, and a grandkitty; Cheyenne. She is also survived by her cherished cousins and many devoted and lifelong friends.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the caring staff at Rush Memorial Hospital, Millers Merry Manor and Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.

Sylvia loved a party and to honor her social nature a celebration of life will be held from 4-8 PM Tuesday August 23, 2016, on what would have been her 79th birthday, at the 201 Building in Rushville (201 N. Main Street). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Chapter "M" P.E.O. Scholarship Fund, Rush County Community Foundation, Rush Memorial Hospital Foundation, or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
