DEATH OF MADISON COLE -- Sac Sun 9/3/1903

Twenty Years a Resident of Douglas Township-In His Seventy-eighth Year-Funeral Took Place Last Friday.

Madison Cole, an aged and esteemed citizen of Douglas township, died on Wednesday morning, August 26, 1903, at the home of his son, William L. Cole, with whom he has resided the past fourteen years. The decedent was in his seventy-eighth year and his death was due to advanced age and Bright's disease. The funeral took place at the W.L. Cole home on Friday afternoon at one o'clock, Rev. G.W. Shideler, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church in Newell, delivering the funeral discourse and officiating at the burial service in the Newell cemetery.

Madison Cole was born June 13, 1826 in Dearborn county, Indiana, where he resided with his parents until he was twenty-two years of age, when he united in marriage with Miss Sarah Jane Swing. Their home continued in Indiana until 1856, when they moved to Clinton county, Iowa, and thence in 1883 to Douglas township, Sac county. Mr. Cole's faithful companion died three years ago last April. They leave a family of nine children, namely; Malinda, wife of George Shadle, of Cedar township; Abbie, wife of James Cook, of Lyons, Iowa; Fannie, wife of R.W. Allison, of Greenwich, Kansas; John, residing near Storm Lake; William L., of Douglas township; Inez, wife of R.J. Paeper, of Douglas township; Charles, residing at Varina; Abe U., of Douglas township; and Miss Olie Cole. All of the children but Mrs. Allison were present at the funeral, as were also the decedent's brother Israel, residing at Arion, Iowa, and Israel Cole's sons, Walter and F.M., the last named the steward of the Crawford county infirmary and farm.
