Carol Ann Staggs, 76, of Ottumwa, passed away March 20, 2016, at Hospice House in Ottumwa. She was born in Story City on Feb. 9, 1940, to Overt and Juella Rod Holland.

She was baptized, confirmed and married at Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland, Iowa. She married Dan Staggs on Aug.14, 1960.

Carol was a serious competitor in sports in her youth at Roland high School. She enjoyed playing softball and basketball. In 1958, she was the state free throw champion of Iowa. She was employed as a teacher’s assistant at Eisenhower School and was later the student union manager with Ottumwa Heights and Indian Hills Community College, retiring in 2000. A longtime member of First Lutheran Church, Carol was also a member of Ottumwa Service League and a Gold Star Sister in the Roland American Legion Auxiliary. Carol was the administrator and organizer of the “Miller High Life Tennis Tournament” she and Dan ran for 20 years. She loved seeing everyone from all over come back year after year. She was a passionate fan of all kinds of sports. Carol enjoyed collecting Norwegian memorabilia and is well known for her UFF DA V license plate, proclaiming her Norwegian heritage. Later in life she could often be found doing crossword puzzles or reading a book. She loved being on the beach anywhere, but especially at Satellite Beach in Florida for a few months each winter. The greatest passions in her life were her husband, Dan, and her beloved children and grandchildren. Carol was the backbone and cheerleader of her family, providing support for her husband as he coached basketball and tennis for many years in Ottumwa. She was also an avid supporter of her children and grandchildren in all of their activities. She didn’t want to miss a thing.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Dan Staggs; sons, Jeff (Shannon) Staggs of Sutherland, Nebraska, and Greg (Sherri) Staggs of Oostburg, Wisconsin; son-in-law, Mike Fontana of Ankeny; sisters-in-law, Mary Holland Dawson of West Bend, Lou Holland of Kansas City, Missouri, and Barb Holland Johnson of Virginia Beach, Virginia; brother-in-law, Ron Staggs of Cincinnati, Ohio; grandchildren, Natalie Clark and Taylor, Samantha, Jack and Josh Staggs; stepgrandchildren, Matthew and Emily Fontana and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Amy Juella Staggs-Fontana; a sister and brother-in-law; three brothers, Wayne, Donald and Loren Holland, and a sister-in-law, Marsha Staggs. Her body has been cremated.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church; Pastor Mark Johnson officiating. Visitation with family will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the First Lutheran Church. Memorials may be made to Hospice Serving Davis and Wapello Counties or First Lutheran Church.
