Sylvia Savonia was born in 1826 in Vermont. At the age of four she learned to read. When thirteen, she was sent ten miles from her home to attend school. She had a keen mind and was a diligent student. Sylvia performed various household duties at a very young age.
Her parents joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1842. Her family left Vermont in 1843 and traveled to Nauvoo where they lived for three years along with the other Saints. They were driven from their home and went to Winter Quarters, and from there they traveled by covered wagon to the Salt Lake Valley, arriving on September 22, 1848.
Sylvia married Lorenzo Hill Hatch on February 28, 1851. He had buried his first wife on the Plains in Nebraska and had no children.
Sylvia moved with her husband to Lehi and supported him in his various callings as he served the Church and the community. He was away much of the time as a member of the Territorial Legislature, counselor in the bishopric and mayor of Lehi.
He served a two-year mission to England, leaving Sylvia and Catherine, his third wife, to manage and support their families.
Sylvia often worked in the fields and drove the oxen as Catherine cared for their babies. They were never without bread, though sometimes it was made from barley meal. their charitable hearts made them divide what they had with those more needy than themselvs.
Lorenzo was called to move to Cache Valley and became the bishop of Franklin. The families then included three wives. These three families moved in 1863, and three homes were established.
Sylvia, Catherine and Lorenzo spent their last years in Logan doing temple work. Sylvia passed away in November 1904.
