Clara Morris Stephens, 90, formerly of Charlotte, died Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at Mission Hospital in Asheville. She was born in Charlotte on February 1, 1921 to the late Mark Neil and Ila White Morris. She attended Queens College (now Queens University). Clara married F. Dwight Stephens, Jr. during World War II, just before he shipped out to serve overseas. Upon his return, they began Stephens Mutual Insurance Agency which they operated from their home for thirty years. Clara was both Vice-President of the company and an energetic homemaker, evidenced by her frequent late night hours at either the typewriter or the sewing machine. She was a devoted wife and mother, and a dear friend to many. Clara sang in the Chancel Choir at Myers Park Baptist Church where she was a charter member. She loved her Sewing Club and the Lunch Bunch at Myers Park Country Club, both of which endured for more than 60 years, her PEO Sisterhood and golf. Following Dwight's death, she moved to Asheville to be with her children and their families whom she loved dearly.
Clara is survived by her children, F. Dwight Stephens, III of Raleigh and his fiancee Brigitte Gallien, Nancy Stephens and husband Jim Hall of Almond, Neil Stephens and wife Cindy of Fletcher and Janet Stephens and husband Mark Kurdys of Asheville, grandchildren Laura, Shane and husband Todd, Jill, Elaine, Andrew, Derek, Cara, Sean, Katie, Clare and Meg, great-grandchildren Michael and Ellie, sister-in-law Mary Rogers of Columbia, SC and numerous nephews and nieces.
A service for family and close friends will be held at Myers Park Baptist Church Columbarium on Saturday, June 25 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 E. 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204 or Myers Park Baptist Church Music Ministry, 1900 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207.
