Beverly Powell, 83 of Sioux Falls formerly of Wessington Springs passed away at the Dougherty Hospice House on August 8th 2019.

Beverly Gayle Fischer was born on March 20, 1936 on a farm in rural Wessington to Theodore and Sophia (Freese) Fischer. She was baptized at the Rose Hill Presbyterian church near the family farm. She attended rural schools and graduated in 1954 from Wessington Springs High School.

After graduation, she was employed in the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Wessington Springs where she met George Marvin Powell. They were married on June 18, 1955 at Rose Hill. They began married life on the Powell family farm outside of Wessington Springs. The couple lived there for over 50 years. They retired from the farm life and moved to the Weskota Apartments in Wessington Springs.

While living on the farm, Beverly enjoyed helping with the daily farm routine; raising chickens and growing a large garden. Beverly had an extraordinary talent for baking and canning. Every year, it was a joy for her to take baked goods and canned items to the South Dakota State Fair, more often than not, bringing home top honors in several divisions. She also enjoyed following the Minnesota Twins.

She and Marvin were active members at the Templeton United Church in rural Wessington Springs where she was active in Women’s Fellowship and involved in the music of the rural church.

Never one to sit idle, after her three children left home, Beverly began working at Weskota Manor in Wessington Springs. At Weskota Manor she shared her gift of creativity and love of people as Activities Director for 16 years.

After her retirement, she and Marvin enjoyed traveling to many places in the United States, but always held a special place for Custer State Park.

In 2015, following her husband Marvin’s death, she moved to Sioux Falls where she lived with daughter Nadene Powell. They enjoyed several years together, traveling and shopping. During this time again she shared her gift of creativity by designing and creating beautiful greeting cards which she delighted in sharing with many family and friends.

Beverly was a strong and determined mother and friend. A severe Diabetic for 61 years she fought the disease with dignity and grace.

Happy to share her life are her children George Ted (Jennifer) Powell of Yankton, SD, Vernon Powell of Sioux Falls, SD, and Nadene Powell of Sioux Falls, SD. Six grandchildren; Victoria Powell and Chanze (Leslie) Powell. Adrienne (Jim) Vortherms, Meghan Powell, George Ian (Jessica) Powell, Ethan (Abby Johnson) Powell, two great-grandchildren; Elsie and Colin Vortherms. She is survived by her sister Leona Ragonese* and sisters-in-law, Betty Fischer, Ethel Jane Zimmer and Marian Nelson.
