Cinematographer. Award winning documentarian of political and performing arts, and pioneer of cinéma vérité filmaking, or direct cinema. He developed the first portable, synchronized 16mm camera and sound recording system which allowed him to move around and film events freely. His first major political film, "Primary," was produced in 1960 and documented the Presidential campaigns of John F. Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey. It followed the candidates for five consecutive days, and was the first candid and comprehensive look at a Presidential race. He would later film George Stephanopoulos and James Carville on the 1992 Presidential campaign of Bill Clinton. Titled "The War Room," it won an award for Best Documentary from the National Board of Review for Motion Pictures and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. His 1967 documentary, "Dont Look Back," followed Bob Dylan on his 1965 tour of England, and is considered by many to be a classic in rock filmmaking. He would go on to film other musicians, including David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars," John Lennon, Jefferson Airplane, and Janis Joplin. Two of his films were included in the Library of Congress' National Film Registry, "Primary" in 1990 and "Dont Look Back" in 1998. In 2013 he was awarded an Oscar for Lifetime Achievement by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
