Stephen Blaine Hanks, Born September 19th,1952 - Died September 2nd, 2018

Stephen Blaine Hanks passed away in Marrakech, Morocco on September 2nd, 2018 at the age of 65. Stephen was born in Portland, Oregon on September 19th,1952 to Blaine and Wilma Hanks.

He moved with his family to Pendleton, Oregon in 1968, and graduated from Pendleton High School in 1970. He then went on to receive a degree in Filmmaking and Photography from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA.

Stephen was a cabinet builder/contractor for 20 plus years in Massachusetts before moving to the west coast. He lived in Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego working for Sony and Zing! while continuing to work on various remodelling jobs. Stephen’s last job was managing the Bar NI ranch, a working dude ranch in southern Colorado. Stephen’s vast array of skills and accomplishments were fully evident during the 9 years that he managed the ranch.

Over the years, Stephen would drop into the lives of his Pendleton family and friends for a week or two, or even a few months and make incredible transformations on The Great Pacific building. He rebuilt columns and turrets from molds that he designed and built himself. He re-roofed the building, painted it in its current Victorian color scheme, and engineered the interior arches to double the size of the restaurant - he is in the very fabric of the building. Stephen also worked on many major projects for friends and family, all on his "vacations", leaving his mark of craftsmanship everywhere he went.

Stephen’s passions were reading, writing, movies, biking, travelling, and researching any and every subject that arose. Stephen was an enthusiastic cook and baker, much to the delight of his family and friends but sometimes to the dismay of those in charge of kitchen cleanup. Stephen was the quintessential Renaissance man. Everything he accomplished in his life was a reflection of his interest and curiosity in the world around him.

Stephen retired in February to Taos, New Mexico and was enjoying the process of creating a home and planning his next adventure, which led him to Marrakech.

Stephen is survived by his sisters Nancy Hanks Kroy (Patrick Kroy) of Ojai, Ca, Mary Hanks (Donna Hudson) of Seattle, and Carol Hanks (Ken Schulberg) of Pendleton; nephews Blaine Ryan Hanks of Caldwell, ID, and Addison Hanks Schulberg (Zoe Holmes) of Pendleton; sister-in-law Tammy Card and her son Mitchell Card of Caldwell, ID; aunt Roseanne McClellan of Walla Walla; uncle Dale Gorton of Independence, OR; and twelve cousins and their families. He also left behind many beloved friends from all over the country.

Stephen was preceded in death by his parents Blaine and Wilma Hanks and his brother David Michael Hanks.

Stephen’s family and friends are invited to an informal “Celebration of Life” which will be held on Sunday October 7, 2018, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Great Pacific Wine and Coffee Company in Pendleton, Oregon.
