Johnny Armstrong passed away on Wednesday, July, 31, 2019 in Lancaster. He was born in Jackson Miss. on June 12, 1933. He was eighty-six.

He is survived by two sons and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Jeffrey Dalton, parents; Leon and Lucy Armstrong of Tuscaloosa Alabama and brother Carl Armstrong of Winston-Salem N.C.

He grew up in Tuscaloosa Ala. where he graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering along with a Commission as a 2nd Lt. in the Air Force. He spent most of his career flight-testing high-performance research aircraft and space craft. He was in the Air Force for 4 years at Edwards AFB testing B-58 and F-104 Mach 2 aircraft. He was proud to have been the first Non-Rated Air Force officer to fly to Mach 2. Following separation from the USAF as Lieutenant, he worked for NASA Marshall for a year where he was technical assistant to the flight test team for the first launch of the Saturn rocket. He then returned to the Air Force Flight Test Center as a civilian employee working a total of 54 years testing the most exciting aircraft/space craftM including the X-15, Lifting Bodies, and Space Shuttle.

He received many awards and honors including being selected as:
Eagle by the AFFTC Flight Test Historical Foundation 2006
Society of Flight Test Engineers Kelly Johnson Award - 2005
Rotary National Award for Space Accomplishments - 2005
USAF Meritorious Civilian Service Medal - 2003 University of Alabama Distinguished Engineering Fellow – 1990
