A native of Elberton, GA, he was the son of the late Henry and Mattie Tate. A well known educator and retired Executive Director of the Georgia Association of Educators, Dr. Tate was former Executive Secretary of the Former Georgia Teachers and Education Association A former Georgia State Senator, a graduate of Fort Valley State College/University, Atlanta University, University of Kentucky where Dr. Tate was the first Black to receive his PhD. He was a member of Butler Street CME Church, Atlanta. -Survivors include his wife, Virginia Burnett Tate, Atlanta; children: Veloisa Marsh, Senator Horacena Tate and Calvin Lee Tate; brothers: Marvin Tate and Herman Tate.
