He graduated from Ft. Wingate Indian School, and then began a career as a carpenter until WWII began. He served in the US Army 1289th combat engineers in Europe and in the Pacific. He returned to build Hatch Brothers Trading Post with his brother Claude. He enjoyed trading post life and was well known as Joe Yazzie (little Joe, after his father). He met Elsie in the Store. Fell in love with her, and married her.
Elsie survives him along with their five boys, William V. (Genola), Raymond S. (Barbara), John W., Robert L., and Charles L. (Alfreita).
Funeral services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center, on Highway 64 in Kirtland, New Mexico on July 13, 2019 at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at the Fruitland/Kirtland Cemetery. Raymond's care is entrusted to Brewer, Lee and Larkin Funeral Home, 103 E. Ute Street in Farmington, NM.
