Retired Colonel Samuel P. Walker, 77, died at Riverside Regional Medical Center on Dec. 20, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. COL Walker was born in Brunswick County, Virginia. He joined Wilson Chapel Baptist Church in Lawrenceville, Virginia, at an early age, and throughout his military career, he worshipped at the post chapel with his family. COL Walker had been a resident of York County, Virginia, since his retirement. However, his military career travels made him a citizen of the world. COL Walker enjoyed his military career, where he excelled in both knowledge and skill, earning many military awards and honors, including the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. COL Walker was deeply devoted to his family, his country, and his faith. He devoted more than 27 years of service to his country as a U.S. Army officer. He was loved and respected by those who knew him, both personally and professionally. COL Walker was predeceased by his parents, Samuel and Maggie Walker, and his brothers, Edward and Herbert Walker. COL Walker leaves behind his loving wife of 54 years, Juanita, and two daughters, Lynne and Toni. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends. The family is most grateful for the kindness, comfort and compassion provided by the York County Fire and Rescue Operations and the medical staff at Riverside Regional Medical Center. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 4, 2019, at Hampton University Memorial Church. Burial will be at the Hampton Memorial Gardens with full military honors.
