He was Derry NH's first recipient of the Boston Post Cane. From the Boston Post newspaper bio: "Patrick GIllespie, Derry NH. 92 years. Born in Ireland on May 16, 1817 Patrick Gillespie came to the United States at the age of 26 to settle and to grow up with a young country. He first lived in Lawrence where he worked several years in the mills of that city. During the CIvil war, he served as a private in Company E., Fifty-eighth Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment. He was honorably discharged June 3, 1865. Mr. Gillespie has reared a family of eight children; for the past 15 years he has made his home with his youngest son, Charles F. Mr. Gillespie's longevity is ascribed to a hardy constitution and a simple, regular life.
