In 1909 he was the first recipient from the town of Alstead NH of the Boston Post Cane. His bio in that newspaper reads: "Azel R. Emerson, Alstead NH, 87 years. Mr. Emerson was born in Alstead in the year 1822, the son of a farmer. After completing his early education in the local school, he earned his first money by teaching school. At one time he chopped wood for 25 cents a cord. Later he became a manufacturer of plows and other farming implements; this was his business for 30 years. He was then postmaster of the town for 12 years. Mr. Emerson has taken an active interest in public affairs and has held all the important town offices. He is a man of more than ordinary judgment, kindly and affable. His longevity is attribute to temperate habits, simple living and good constitution."
