At birth he was named Barney Clarence, the name "Barney" being after his maternal grandfather, Barney Bonapart Cone. He was oldest of 3 children born to Bernice Aline Cone & her husband. His parents were divorced when he was young and he had no relationship with his father after the divorce. Later in life he decided to take the whole name of his namesake. He changed his name to Barney Bonapart Cone II.
Barney was divorced at the time of his death. He had married Faye Vincent and they had one child.
Barney is survived by his only son Steven Vincent Shipman, daughter-in-law Julia Elizabeth Mizell Shipman; his two granddaughters: Mackenzie Laine Shipman and Sophie Hyatt Shipman (Greensboro, NC); as well as cousins, a niece, a nephew, and their families.
