Son of David & Candace (Stratton) Metcalf. His father was born in Oakham MA and his mother in Rutland MA. His death certificate states his place of interment is Cookshire, Canada.
He was the recipient of Gilmanton NH's first award of the Boston Post Cane in 1909. His bio on the Boston Post along with his photo reads: "Horace Metcalf, Gilmanton NH, 92 years. Horace Metcalf was born in Corinth VT June 18, 1817; there he served an apprenticeship to the carpenter's trade. After coming of age he worked at his trade during the summer, but in the winter attended school, and later taught until 1846; then began to lecture on electricity, explaining the use of the telegraph. In 1849 he visited Cookshire, Canada, where he met the woman who later became his wife. He taught school there until his married in 1854; he then turned to market gardening which he followed until six years ago when he moved to Gilmanton. He has never used tobacco or liquor, and attributes his longevity to a very temperate life."
