George H. Ketchum was the first recipient of the Boston Post Cane in 1909 for the town of Ashland NH. The bio (along with the photo shown here) in the Sunday Post, September 5, 1909, stated: "Born in Barre, Vt Jan 6, 1824. In 1866 he went to Contoocook NH where he was in mercantile business for some 30 years. He retired from business in 1896 and came to Ashland to live. His wife, who died March 7, 1905 was a descendant in the eighth generation of the Newcomb who came over in the Mayflower. Mr. Ketchum is descended from Governor Bradford in the ninth generation. He attributes his longevity to temperate habits and a regular life. He hopes to live many years more to enjoy and use the cane.
