Funeral services for Gladys L. Hayes, 91, of Farmerville, LA, will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, May 25, 2006, at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Farmerville. Officiating will be Rev. Jeff Hurst of Beulah Baptist Church. Burial will be at Liberty Hill Cemetery in Farmerville, LA.

Early in her life, she helped raise her brothers and sisters. Gladys also planted, chopped and picked cotton. She's also been known to split rails for fencing, chop wood, milk cows and plow with a mule. Life was hard when she was growing up. Her family was musically inclined and played on various occasions; she played the guitar and fiddle as well as sang.

She raised chickens to support her family, waitressed at J.D. Gillums Café, cooked at the Town House restaurant and later worked as a seamstress at the garment factory in Bernice. Her late husband, Luke Hayes owned and operated small convenient stores. They made numerous friends with the many deer hunters that would come to sit around the stove and swap stories and chew tobacco. She was known to them as Ms. Gladys. She has lots of nieces and nephews that loved their Aunt Glad. She has given us loving memories and dried many tears.

Gladys was a member of Conway Baptist Church, her life evolved around her family and their children. "Mamaw", as the grandchildren called her was their favorite. You could always depend on her to tell stories, teach them games, how to fish, cook and never hesitated to say "I Love You". Everyone was welcome in her home. She worked hard all her life but always had time to lend a ear, laugh with you (sometimes at her own expense) and just be there for us. Her love for GOD was always present and we will never forget how every night, day and any given moment she thought someone needed it, she had a prayer ready. We were truly blessed to have such a warm, loving mother for 91 years.

She is preceded in death by her husband Luther B. Hayes, mother, Allie Johnson Pearson; step-father John Tom ( Daddy Bill ) Pearson; step- brother, Jessie Bo Pearson, Bill ( Mutt ) Pearson; Harry ( Gobler ) Pearson; step-sisters, Hazel Pearson, Eunice Pearson Anderson, Father, Joseph Richard Lockwood; step-mother, Mary Lee Beck Raley; step sisters, Clemmie L.
