Elmer K. Shaffer, 85, of Allentown, died Saturday in the Leader Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Salisbury Township. He was the husband of Helen M. (Stauffer) Shaffer. They observed their 61st wedding anniversary in June.
Shaffer began working at Keiper's Pharmacy, Allentown, during his years in high school. After graduating from high school he attended Muhlenberg College and subsequently received his bachelor's degree in pharmacology from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacology in 1926.
In 1933 he became manager of Keiper's and 20 years later in 1953, became the pharmacy's proprietor.
He sold the drug store to his son, Elmer K. Shaffer Jr., and retired in 1988.

Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late Robert D. and Lila A. (Kuhns) Shaffer.
He was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Allentown, where he was a former Sunday school teacher and church council member.
He was a former member of the board of trustees at the Good Shepherd Home, Allentown.
Survivors: Wife and son, daughter, Lois L., wife of Richard Bohner and sister, Mrs. Mildred Barette both of Allentown; five grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the church. Call 9:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the church. Arrangements, J.S. Burkholder, Allentown.
