Laurie Harper Jr., of Knox St., Statesville, NC died peacefully on July 19, 2019, at his home surrounded by family. He was born in Pinewood, South Carolina on May 5, 1934, the third child of the late Laurie Harper Sr. and Alethia White Harper. On May 6, he married Leona Harriet Anderson and this past May celebrating 63 years before being laid to rest. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a younger brother, brother Clifford Allen Harper.
Laurie graduated from West Philadelphia High School where he lettered in football. He also received an Associates Degree from Mitchell Community College in Business Administration. He served his country in the US Army with distinction and honor and was honorably discharged. During his tenure in the Military, he served with the 82nd Air Borne Division, served three combat tours; one in Korea and two deployments to Vietnam. In addition to short term temporary assignment, he was also stationed in Germany, Japan and Missouri.
Larry, was affectionately known by his family as Ray, was a fun loving person who loved and lived life to the fullest. He was an active member of Calvary United Presbyterian Church serving in roles to include Clerk of Session, Elder, Sunday School Teacher and member and Director of the all male choir.
He was an active member of the NAACP, Elks, American Legion, where he served as Director of the Sons of the American Legion, a Prince Hall Mason and a member on the Statesville Human Relations Committee. Larry was a mail carrier and clerk for the US Postal Service with a combined 40 years of service with the US Government.
In addition to his wife, Leona H. Harper of the home; he is survived by two sons, Laurie Harper, III and his wife, Michelle Robinson Harper of Atlanta, GA and Michael Allyn Harper and his wife, Ann Fortune Harper of Phoenix AZ; six grandchildren, Loreal Harper, Cary Harper, Michele Harper Brown and her husband, Andre, Monique Harper, Ryan Patterson and Lauryn Harper; two great-grandchildren, Mason Harper and Audreena Patterson; a sister, Luvivan Harper Dingle of Virginia; a brother, Abe Harper and his wife, Leone of Philadelphia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, the Calvary Presbyterian Church family, other relatives, neighbors and friends.
Celebration of Life Services will be conducted Thursday, July 25, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at Calvary Presbyterian Church, USA. Reverend Timothy Bates, Pastor will officiate and burial will follow in the Veterans Section of Belmont Cemetery with full Military Honors. Mr. Harper will remain at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home until taken to the church to lie in state at 12:30 p.m. Members of the family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., but will assemble at the residence at other times.
